On Monday the 16th of June, the Kawa Foundation hosted the Tui Forest Tourism Launch 2025. It was a great pleasure to have our guest of honour, Honourable Dr Abdallah Mohammed Juma, Director, Department of Tourism in the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, speak at the event. Our Director Suzanne Degeling presented the Honourable Dr Abdallah Mohammed Juma with our official booklet to commemorate the Tui Forest Tourism Launch 2025. We were also pleased to see over 30 organisations and parties represented at the event, showcasing the need for community engagement in ensuring our vision is successful.
The event began with tours of the 2.8 hectares. These tours showcased our ongoing efforts to plant, native, indigenous, medicinal and endangered species that will create a natural buffer zone to prevent the deforestation of Masingini Forest. We then moved to our observation deck, where speeches were food was provided by one of Kawa Foundation’s social enterprises, Café Blue.
Speeches followed, with our speech from Mr Tahir about the importance of community involvement in ensuring that our Tui Forest Project, and other projects like it, are effective in achieving their goals. One of Kawa Training Center’s past students, Mr Hamza also read a poem, highlighting the importance of our natural surroundings before closing remarks from our Director Suzanne Degeling.
We look forward to welcoming tourists this coming high-season, as we look to showcase Zanzibar’s best kept secret, Masingini Forest. Whilst many tourists visit for the beaches, the ‘Spice Island’ has more to offer, and we look forward to seeing the ongoing commitment from the Commission for Tourism and Heritage towards diversifying the tourism experiences on offer.

Friday 11 April was a big day in the history of Kawa Foundation.
32 bicycles were handed over to the Ministry. The bikes will be used by the Forest Protection Unit (FPU) to patrol Masingini Forest borders. The FPU is established by the Department of Forest under the MAINL and Kawa Foundation. 26 members of the 13 surrounding communities and the rangers of Masingini Forest will join forces to protect Masingini Forest against illegal activities in the forest such as poaching, cutting trees, sand mining. The government has launched the ‘Zanzibar Green Legacy’ campaign to build a green and climate-resilient Zanzibar. The target is to plant three million trees annually. The campaign includes the involvement and participation of all stakeholders at all levels; sustainable tree planting, nursing and management.
Kawa Foundation is supporting the campaign and a memorandum of understanding between MAINL and Kawa Foundation for cooperation in protection and conservation of Masingini Forest Nature Reserve was signed in February 2025. Areas of cooperation are: capacity building, biodiversity conservation, patrol and surveillance, community engagement and ecotourism promotion.
Tui Forest project Zanzibar is an initiative by Kawa Foundation proudly supported by Tui Care Foundation since May 2023. In short Kawa Foundation has created a buffer zone between the encroaching urban development and Masingini Forest, this area is now being ecologically restored, in addition a nursery is built where native tree species are grown from seeds and cutlings as well as endangered species. And it has become a place for visitors to come and enjoy and learn more about the project. The project includes a forest awareness program at secondary schools surrounding the forest, native tree planting, nature based tourism development.
