We are pleased to announce that we will follow up the inspiring gathering last year with a new conference in the beginning of 2025.
The conference will be extended to two days: 22-23rd January 2025, with an optional excursion day on Friday the 24th.
The venue will be the same as in November 2023, at Hifadhi House, with a limit of approximately 70 participants. This year, participants and stakeholders will have more opportunities to present their work with a stand/table, and we hope as many as possible will use this opportunity.
This conference aims to follow up on the co-operations established last year, present inspiring projects, discuss future collaborations, ideas and solutions for better waste management and recycling in Zanzibar.
This meeting will focus on how we can develop successful projects together. The program is in process, and our suggested topics are:
Waste collection and separation –what’s the status around the island?
Solutions – recycling – waste for work – How can we do it/what are the challenges?
Possible fundings for project contributing to more sustainable practises on Zanzibar
Creating a more sustainable tourism industry in Zanzibar – stakeholders’ role and interest
Increased collaboration and creation of network
Awareness and education
However, we ask all former and future participants to reach out to us with their suggestions for presentations and workshop topics. Please contact us at info@kawafoundationzanzibar.com.
" This may be the single most important weekend of the year that will benefit generations to come. Leave a Legacy!

This International Women’s Day, Kawa Foundation and WAJAMAMA invite you to a special afternoon gathering at the TUI Forest Project, held in the spirit of Ramadan and followed by Iftar.
Under the theme “Give to Gain,” we will explore how generosity, knowledge, care, and connection create true wealth in our lives and communities. The program includes interactive workshops on the 8 forms of capital, a meaningful mental health session on life cycles and how giving shapes our personal growth, and restorative forest bathing experiences in nature.
As the sun sets, we will come together to break the fast with a shared Iftar meal — celebrating women, community, reflection, and the power of giving as a path to gaining.
Women in Leadership positions are often overwhelmed. Making sure the business or organisation is going well, staff are happy, while caring for your home and family. But when is it is time to care for yourself? How do we balance? How to we keep well ourselves so that we can keep giving?

Tourism – It is a man’s world – no it is not! Only in Zanzibar it seems to be the general idea that tourism is for men whereas worldwide most jobs in tourism and hospitality are occupied by women.
Women in Zanzibar are not taking the opportunities that are available for them in Tourism. Why? Maybe it is the lack of education and families holding their daughters back and stigma that associates tourism with drugs, alcohol and prostitution.
There is a need to go into the communities where there are tourism attractions and convince parents and husbands to give girls a chance. There is much work to be done here. We started with community outreach projects for girls in 2019, as a pilot, it was a success and from that moment onwards 50% of our students have been girls and we are working hard to keep it that way and increase and improve the position of women in the tourism job market. It requires much more than just providing education. It requires making sure that the girls can work in an area where they are respected and save and feel comfortable.
Empowering Women starts with having choices. A choice to get an education is the key to empancipation.
