Zanzibar, Tanzania, renowned for its stunning beaches and rich Swahili heritage, holds a hidden treasure just 8 kilometres from the renowned Stone Town: Masingini Forest Nature Reserve (MFNR). This forest boasts breathtaking beauty, teeming with diverse flora, fauna, and tranquil freshwater streams. Despite its splendour, it remains largely undiscovered by tourists.
Regrettably, the forest faces numerous threats. Rapid population growth in Zanzibar, coupled with urban sprawl, deforestation, and poaching, poses imminent dangers. The once forest-covered areas surrounding Masingini Forest NP have succumbed to residential development, posing a significant risk to the forest’s survival.
There is a pressing need to diversify Zanzibar’s tourism offerings. Many tour operators provide similar activities, leading visitors to believe that a brief stay is sufficient. However, Zanzibar has vast untapped potential for sustainable tourism, including nature-based and cultural experiences. Expanding tour options and effective marketing can entice tourists to prolong their stay, boosting revenue for the island, creating employment opportunities for locals, and safeguarding Zanzibar’s natural heritage.
By providing alternative sources of income to local communities, we can alleviate pressure on the forest while fostering a sense of stewardship among residents. This holistic approach not only supports economic growth but also ensures the long-term protection of Zanzibar’s invaluable natural resources.
Our project aims to establish a protective buffer zone between the forest and expanding residential areas. This involves acquiring land adjacent to the forest, restoring and reforesting it, and offering nature education through an outdoor classroom. The goal is to raise awareness about the significance of the forest among youth and the community while fostering sustainable income-generating activities such as eco/community tourism.
Collaboration with Masingini Forest Nature Reserve (MFNR) and their rangers is integral to our efforts. Together, we select and prepare locations within the forest for tree planting. MFNP also plays a crucial role in training the Forest Protection Unit, who will patrol the forest border by bicycle, assist with tree planting, and monitor progress.
Native trees and seedlings from the nursery will be prepared in planting packages by nursery staff for tree planting activities. These trees will be planted in carefully selected locations. Secondary students participating in the Forest Awareness program, Kawa/TUI Academy Zanzibar students, tourists joining nature-based tours, and the Forest Protection Unit will be involved in the tree planting efforts.
A media/marketing campaign will be established to promote various aspects of the project, including Masingini Forest, new tours, the adopt-a-tree initiative, tree planting tours, combatting deforestation, promoting the use of refillable bottles, advocating for bio-cooling through tree planting, and supporting indigenous tree planting campaigns in gardens and hotel properties.
A forest awareness program targeting school children in Zanzibar is running at five secondary schools. It aims to educate students about local flora and fauna, particularly endangered species like the Red Colobus Monkey, while highlighting the significance of trees and the threats posed by deforestation. The program involves visits to Masingini Forest National Park, its buffer zone, and the nursery, along with activities like planting mini forests at schools and homes, and tree planting in the forest.
A Bike it Hike it station has been established at the entrance of the project. This station serves as a hub for renting bicycles and organizing tours. It includes storage space for bikes, work areas, and office space.
Tourist activities, including eco-tourism experiences, have been developed. These activities include walking and cycling trails, guided tours, village visits, farm tours, cooking workshops, tourism workshops, homestays, and voluntourism opportunities. The Bluebikes station facilitates bookings and bike rentals for these tours.
A project team has been assembled to oversee the implementation of the project. This team consists of local and international members, including a project coordinator, teachers for the forest awareness program, and members of the Forest Protection Unit. The team collaborates closely with TUI Care Foundation and other stakeholders to ensure the project’s success.
